The power of the pause and listening is something I did not fully appreciate until I saw how much it changed the way I lead, communicate, and make decisions.

Leadership is not only about what you say or how quickly you respond. It is about how you hold a moment. How you allow space. How you truly hear what is being said and sometimes, what is not.

In this episode, I share two simple leadership moves that elevated how I show up in business. They are not complicated. But they require intention.

Listen to the podcast here:

The power of the pause gives you control

There was a moment in a Zoom meeting that stayed with me.

Something was said that could have triggered an immediate response. The old version of me would have jumped in quickly, explained, corrected, or defended.

But this time, I paused.

And in that pause, something shifted.

The silence created space. It allowed the other person to sit with what they had said. It gave me a moment to choose my response instead of reacting automatically.

The power of the pause is not about avoiding conversation. It is about leading it with intention.

When you pause:

  • You give yourself time to think clearly
  • You prevent emotional reactions from taking over
  • You allow others to reflect on their own words

That small moment of stillness can change the entire direction of a conversation.

The power of listening builds stronger leadership

The second shift came through listening.

Not surface-level listening. Real listening.

I began using personal questionnaires with my team to understand them beyond their roles. What motivated them. What they cared about. Where they wanted to grow. That changed everything.

When you listen deeply, you stop guessing. You stop assuming. You start leading people based on who they actually are.

The power of listening shows up in:

  • Better alignment between individual goals and team goals
  • Stronger trust within your team
  • More effective communication
  • Greater engagement and ownership

People want to feel understood. When they do, they show up differently.

The power of the pause and listening work together

These two leadership moves are connected.

When you pause, you create space to listen.
When you listen, you respond with clarity instead of reaction.

Together, they shift your leadership from reactive to intentional. They allow you to lead conversations instead of being pulled into them.

How to start using the power of the pause and listening today

You do not need a major change to begin.

Start with small moments.

  • In your next meeting, pause before responding
  • Let silence sit for a few seconds longer than feels comfortable
  • Ask one extra question before giving your opinion
  • Pay attention to what someone is saying beneath their words

These are simple actions, but they build awareness. And awareness is what strengthens leadership over time.

Leadership is built in moments like this

RELATED: Win Through Leadership

Leadership is not defined in big speeches or major decisions.

It is shaped in the small moments.
The pause you take.
The way you listen.
The response you choose.

Those moments build trust, clarity, and influence. And over time, they change everything.
